Since it's launch on July 6th, PokemonGo is catching fire on college campuses across the U.S. and SIUE is no different. This popular augmented reality game app which Apple states was downloaded more than any other app within it's first week of release, has amped up the foot traffic around the university.
“The first week that it launched, we noticed that one night we had 200 PokemonGO players on campus, particularly in The Gardens area,” says SIUE Campus Police Chief Kevin Scnmoll.
But The Gardens isn't the only area attracting swarms of Pokemon maniacs, some buildings becoming renowned hotspots.
“The best spot is by the Engineering Building, where there are four Pokestops,” says Assistant Director of Residence Life Sarah Kirkpatrick “They have a lot of good Pokemon and a gym.”
With all this increased activity, university organizations are taking notice and joining in on the fun. The SIUE Cougar Store has been leveraging this new obsession by Tweeting about nearby and active lures near their location.
To help the Cougar Store make an even bigger splash among incoming students, StayMobile will be partnering with the Cougar Store and other SIUE departments to help promote the PokemonGo themed [Cougar Welcome] beginning in September.
